 Hello Families!

We have been working hard this week!  Here is what we have been learning:

Moral Focus:  This month we are talking about gratitude.  Gratitude means having a thankful heart.  We are talking about the difference between saying "thanks" and really feeling thankful in our hearts.

Reading: We are continuing to work on setting.  We are working more in depth with it by identifying all the settings in the story.

Phonics:  This week we worked on Hh.  We are also starting to work on fluency by using out sight word knowledge and our decoding abilities to read short passages.  We are practicing fluency by reading it smoothly.

Math: We are focused on making tally marks and reading tally marks.  Our goal is to look at tally marks and count by 5s.

Social Studies:  We have been talking a lot about what makes up a community.  The week we are focusing on ourselves and the ways that we make a community better.  We have talked about how important it is that we are all different and bring so many great things to our community.

Reminders:

-Our field trip is on November 14th at the Museum of Nature and Science.  Please remember to pack a sack lunch for your child on this day.  The bag should be disposable.  Label the bag and all items in the bag.  Your child must ride on the bus to and from the museum.  If you want to check them out when we return, you must do so through the front office of the school.

- This month, Kindergarten is in charge of the Moral Focus assembly for all primary grades.  We are going to be going over gratitude.  This assembly will be held at the end of the month.  More details to come.

 Hello Families,

Happy short week.  I hope your Fall Break is restorative!

Moral Focus: We are working on respecting each other by not spreading germs.  We have been talking about coughing in our arms, covering our sneezes, blowing our nose and then washing our hands.

Reading: We are working on identifying the characters and setting in a story.  We are also practicing explaining what a character is and what a setting is.

October 3-7

 Hello Families!

Parent-teacher conferences are underway.  I am so excited to be meeting with you about your child.  If you haven't already signed up, please sign up.  If you need to schedule for a different day or over Zoom, I am happy to accommodate.

This month in reading we are focusing on sequencing stories.  I had planned to read the book There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat with the class.  This story is about an old lady who swallows a bunch of different items.  This book is actually a part of a series.  The book I am planning on reading with the class is about an old lady who swallows a bat, ghost, witch and cat.  Please let me know if you are not comfortable with this story.  If I don't hear from you, I will assume all is well.

October 31 is a half day.  Students can dress up like their favorite book character.

Moral Focus: "I can show respect by taking care of others and my environment."  We are talking about showing respect by saying "please" and "thank you", cleaning up after ourselves, being patient while others are talking, coughing into our sleeves and showing others we care.  You can continue these conversations at home.

Reading: "I can determine if a text is fiction.  I can retell the story."  We are talking about the characteristics of a fiction text, (illustrations, beginning-middle-end, characters, setting, problem, solution, animals that talk, etc.)  You can continue this work at home when you read with your child.

Phonics: "I can identify the letter Ii and say it's sound."  Students have been working on naming things in the world that start with Ii.  They have also started working on reading 3-letter words and writing 3-letter words that have the short Aa and short Ii in the middle of a word.  You can continue this practice at home by having your child write and read words like "cat", "van", "lip", "tin", etc.

Social Studies/Science: We have continued working on our 5 senses.  We are going to be doing more exploring with this as we start "investigation walks" around the school and record our 5 senses while we eat popcorn!

We started book buddies this week with one of the 6th grade classes.  Both classes are absolutely loving it!  This week we paired each student up with an older buddy and they read books together.  This is every Thursday morning after recess.

I am still missing some field trip money/ permission slips.  Please remember to get those to me ASAP, unless you would like to keep your child home that day, or have them stay at school with the office staff or a buddy class.

Thank you all for your support and participation in making this a successful school year.

September 26- September 30

Hello Families!

Here is what we have been working on in class.

Moral Focus: "I can show wisdom when I follow the rules." Wisdom- we are continuing to talk about how to show wisdom at school; specifically with following directions and making good choices.

Reading: "I can determine if a story is fictional."  We have started talking about fiction text.  Fiction stories are fake.  We have been saying "fiction is fake".  Some characteristics that make a story fiction is stories about mythical creatures and where animals talk.  The elements of a fictional story are characters, setting, plot, conflict and resolution.

Phonics:  "I can identify the letter Cc and say it's sound."  We have been continuing to review the letters we have learned: Aa, Bb, Ll, Mm, Nn, Pp, Rr, Ss, Tt.  Our newest letter is Cc.  We are working on writing, identifying, saying letter names and sounds.  We are also starting to make words with these letters to read and write them.

Math: "I can recognize the number of objects."  In math we are working on grabbing and counting, looking at a group of objects and saying how many there are without counting them individually.  We are also practicing all the different ways to make 5.

Social Studies/Science: "I can say the 5 senses.  I can explain how we use our 5 senses."  We have been working on the sense of smell and sight.  This is going to be a very important skill to help make our writing even better as well!

Important Information:

-Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up October 10, 11 and 12.  I will also be scheduling time slots for the week before for anyone who cannot make those dates work.  An email will be coming soon with the slots to sign up for.  If you need to schedule a Zoom conference, just reach out to me and we will make it happen.  Otherwise conferences will be held in person.
